Why Atlanta?

Atlanta is often referred to as the Black Capital of America, with a thriving Black middle class, vibrant cultural scene, and historically Black colleges and universities. Ranked by Forbes as one of the top U.S. cities for African Americans to thrive economically, it serves as the ideal setting for a weekend of empowerment, innovation, and celebration.

The Big Picture: Why This Matters

African American men in the U.S. face a dual crisis of wealth inequality and health disparities. Despite gains in education and income, systemic barriers persist.

wealth
gap

Median wealth: $44,100 for African American households vs. $284,310 for white households (6.4× gap)

  • Black homeownership: 43% vs. 74% for white families
  • Projected zero median wealth for Black families by 2053 without policy change.

health disparities

  • Life expectancy: 6 years shorter than white men
  • Higher rates of hypertension, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes
  • Mental health treatment gap: Only 26% of African American men with concerns receive treatment.

systemic stress

  • Discrimination and “weathering” contribute to chronic health problems and lower wealth accumulation.a
